The Brick House & Power Town Offer Opportunities Together
Luke Eaton and Nick Picariello, came to BH Outreach Coordinator Karen Stinchfield with the idea to offer “the littles” (a term of endearment for the young children who live in the Power Town Apartments just behind BH) a weekly opportunity to go to Unity Park and play outdoor games with the two of them. Noting that it is clear that the children would like to be involved in BH in-house activities, which are mostly for teens eleven and up, they thought it would be a good idea to create such a program.
Sharon Cottrell, Manager of Power Town Apartments, and Karen Stinchfield, Brick House Outreach Coordinator, put their heads together and decided to develop a grant request for MassHousing, the state housing organization that supports Power Town as lower income housing.
The grant request was fulfilled, and now The Brick House and Power Town are able to offer weekly treks to Unity Park for outdoor games for children 7 to 10, weekly Arts & Crafts classes for children 5 to 10, as well as special workshops throughout the year, including hula hoop making, rainstick making, as well as the recently completed mural project.
These programs are intended to offer engaging opportunities to the neighborhood children who live in the Power Town Apartments, but other children are welcome to become involved as space provides. For more information on these programs, or donating Arts & Crafts supplies or outdoor game equipment, please contact Karen at 863-9576 or Jared at 863-9559.
